Lamenting what to do with your Thursday night? If you are, staying in clearly you should be watching Community/Parks and Recreation, which both feature some of my favorite smart female characters on television right now–flawed activist and Psych major, Britta Perry and practically flawless (minus being a steamroller) political hopeful (Knope/Warren 2016?), Leslie Knope.
However, if you are going out, come check out some smart ladies (and guys too) discussing feminism and social activism tonight amongst other things.
At Santa Monica College at 6:30pm, a panel including Shira Tarrant, a Professor of Gender Studies and author of Men and Feminism, Pia Guerrero, founder of Adios Barbie, and Hugo Schwyzer, a Professor of Gender Studies and blogger, will be discussing the role of men in feminism as both activist and ally. This event is free.
Or you can go see the incomparable Angela Davis in conversation with Robin Levi at the Hammer at 7pm. Davis’ recent work focuses on the problems with and inherent racism of the prison system. I, for one, would be very interested in what she has to say about the Occupy movement. Davis remains one of the most influential activists of our time, if you’ve never seen her speak, I urge you to do so. This event is also free.
After all this intellectual insight, you might be hungry, so head on down to Melrose Night, where the stores are open late and food trucks abound. You can plan the next revolution over your grilled cheese or ice cream sandwich.
